Shawano County Library awarded Teen Inclusive Internship Grant

Earlier this year, the Library Services Team at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction awarded Shawano County Library one of six grants to Wisconsin Public Libraries for a Teen Inclusive Internship Program, which provided funding for the chosen libraries to offer paid summer 2024 internships to recruit and hire teens reflecting the diversity of their communities.

Cathy Pescinski, the Teen Librarian at Shawano County Library's main branch in Shawano, tells us about the library's program goals, what the interns learned, and her experience with the hard-working teens:

"Shawano was selected as a recipient of an LSTA grant through WI DPI to host a teen intern. One of the goals of the program is to introduce diverse teens to librarianship with hope they may consider it as a career path. The second goal is to have the teens share their knowledge and interests by developing a connected learning project to benefit the community. Through the interview process, we met two amazing young women and decided we could not decide, so we hired both! They are very different personalities, but equally delightful and capable.

"Demetria Lyons is going into her sophomore year at Shawano High School. She will be doing an informational display about Native American dance including displaying the ribbon skirt she made.

"Tegan Wilson, who is entering her junior year at Shawano High School, loves all things plants and animals.

She is doing a weekly display about invasive plant species and will be following that up with a native plant seed giveaway.
